Reasons Why I Write

Why I write

Hey beautiful people! I hope you’re all easing into 2016 with fresh hearts, minds, dreams and goals.

It’s a difficult time of year for me to get much writing done – as much as I *love* the challenge of trying to write with constant interruptions from my four darling children, the forced sabbatical can be a blessing in disguise for people like me who can be driven by accomplishment. It forces me to rest more, engage more and enjoy life more, and that’s a good thing.

It allows me the time to give thought to who I am as a writer, who I want to be as a writer, whether my work aligns with those things and whether that connects with you as a reader.

It also allows me the time to ask myself the question of why do I write?

And this is why.

I write because I believe in the power of story-telling.
I write because I want to explore meaning.
I write because I want to soften the edges of a rough world.
I write because words heal the brokenness in me, and hopefully in you.
I write because I want to cultivate empathy and compassion.
I write because I want to facilitate change.
I write because I want to raise awareness and understanding of things that matter.
I write because I want my flaws and failings to give you permission to embrace yours.
I write because I want to live with courage and authenticity.
I write because I want to bring connection into a disconnected world.

I write because the heart in me is the heart in you. Because we are all on this journey together. And while your experiences may look different to mine and our paths may not be the same, we are all made up of the same things that make us innately human. We all share joy, laughter, tears, doubt, confusion, grief, anger, elation, awe, wonder, sadness, disappointment and hope. We share the same longing for connection and desire to experience something bigger than ourselves.

I write because for so many years I believed I couldn’t. I no longer believe that. And I hope that in being brave enough to share my heart, you will feel brave enough to share yours.

I’m looking forward to all that 2016 will bring, and sharing the next step of my journey with you xx

  1. I have made the comment on your Facebook, but would like to post here again.
I admire your wisdom, openness and generosity. Your writing will help to make sense about lives that are confused, difficult, complex, difficult to understand or lives that hide in the shadows. You are making a significant contribution to others.
